Consistency the key for Joey Mawson

Australian Joey Mawson believes consistency will be his key to success as the 2016 German Formula 4 Championship continues at the famous Nürburgring this weekend.

The PODIUM-backed driver has secured six race wins so far in 2016 and with a handy 46-point lead in the standings he’s focused on consistency to maintain the number one spot.

“It’s great to be leading at the moment, but with nine races across three rounds there’s still a long way to go in the championship,” said Mawson.

“As I have done all year, my focus is purely on being consistent and getting podium results which then allows the championship to take care of itself.”

While he has secured 12 top five results from the 15 races so far in the 2016 Championship, Mawson admits the corresponding round last year at the Nürburgring was a disappointing one for him and the Van Amersfoort Racing team – something he is hoping to make amends for this weekend.

“Nürburgring was may worst round of the year last year but we learnt from that and everyone in the team is determined to make this weekend a successful one,” said Mawson.

“We had a very positive test day there a few weeks ago where we learnt a lot and showed good speed, hopefully that will translate into a successful round.”

Mawson (254) leads Mick Schumacher (208) by 46 points in the standings with third placed Mike-David Ortmann a further 51 points adrift.

Mawson will take to the circuit on Friday morning for two practice sessions ahead of qualifying in the afternoon.  The driver’s fastest time in qualifying decides the grid for race one and second fastest for race two.  The finishing positions in the opening 30-minute race decide the grid for Sunday afternoon’s race three, with the top ten being reversed.

Race win extends Joey Mawson’s points lead

Australian Joey Mawson secured a race win during round five of the 2016 German Formula 4 Championship at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on the weekend.

After charging from 11th to fourth in the opening race on Saturday, the PODIUM-backed driver enjoyed his sixth victory from 15 starts this year, with a dominant performance during Race Two on Sunday morning aboard his Van Amersfoort Racing entry.  He then backed his six-second win up by recording third placing in the final race on Sunday afternoon to extend his lead in the points standings to 46.

Mawson’s main rival in the championship chase, Mick Schumacher, endured a troublesome run in qualifying forcing him to play catch up all weekend after starting the first two races outside the top ten.

“Points wise it was really good with a win in Race Two and also a podium in the final race,” said Mawson.

“Mick struck a bit of trouble in qualifying and I was able to make the most of the opportunity and extend the lead in the championship.

“We had a strong car all weekend, again the Van Amersfoort guys did a fantastic job to give me the best possible chance of a great result.  It is very pleasing to be able to reward them with a couple of podiums.”

While pleased with another race win, Mawson believes his performance in the reverse-top ten Race Three was his most satisfying for the weekend.

“Race three was the most satisfying result.  I didn’t get off to the best of starts after having a bit of trouble with the clutch but then the racing and battles was pretty intense,” said Mawson.

“The satisfaction of scoring the podium after such hard racing was a real highlight of the weekend.”

With three rounds remaining, Mawson heads the standings on 254 points with Schumacher second on 208.  Mike-David Ortmann is a further 51 points further back in third place.

The sixth round of the highly-competitive Championship will be held at the Nürburgring on August 5-7.

Second half of the job begins for Joey Mawson

Australian Joey Mawson will resume his chase for the 2016 ADAC German Formula 4 Championship this weekend with Round Five being held at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

The PODIUM-backed driver enters the second half of the year with a 20-point buffer over second placed Mick Schumacher in the standings.

“To be leading at the halfway mark is very pleasing but it is who is leading at the end of the year that matters most,” said Mawson.

“My goal is to keep scoring good results, podium finishes and going for race wins, if I continue to do this then the championship will take care of itself.”

After a break where he took in a few sights of Europe, Mawson returned to the track recently for a test at the Red Bull Ring.

“I had a good summer break and a very positive test day, all is looking well towards another strong weekend,” said Mawson.

“I like the Red Bull Ring. It’s where I secured my first win in the championship.  They have laid a new surface this year and the kerbs have also been modified , so I think that lap times will be up on 2015.

“It’s a great track – the best on the calendar, in my opinion, along with Hockenheim. There will certainly be some exciting battles.”

Mawson (202) leads Mick Schumacher (182) by twenty points in the standings with third placed Kim Luis Schramm a further 57 points adrift.

Mawson will take to the circuit on Friday morning for two practice sessions ahead of qualifying in the afternoon.  The driver’s fastest time in qualifying decides the grid for race one and second fastest for race two.  The finishing positions in the opening 30-minute race decide the grid for Sunday’s race three, with the top ten being reversed.

Two wins for Joey Mawson in Oschersleben

Australian Joey Mawson secured a pair of victories at Round Four of the 2016 ADAC German Formula 4 Championship at the Motorsport Arena in Oschersleben across the weekend.

The PODIUM-backed driver charged down the leaders in the opening race from his third starting position to claim the win ahead of polesitter Thomas Preining and Mick Schumacher.

Mawson then started on pole position for race two alongside Schumacher and jumped into the lead from the start of the race. The Van Amersfoort Racing driver edged away from his championship rival during the early laps before maintaining a buffer of one second for the remainder of the 30-minute race.

In final race of the weekend, where the grid is set by reversing the top finishers from race one, Mawson was boxed in through turn two when all the cars were bunched up and slipped back to 12th place. As Mawson was making his way forward he was alongside Jannes Fittje going into turn three, they touched in the corner and Mawson’s front right wishbone was broken putting an end to his race.

“I had quite a good weekend, the last race didn’t quite go to plan but overall it was a very solid weekend. I came into the weekend with a three point lead and leave it with a 20-point lead,” said Mawson.

“Oschersleben seems to be a special place for us, we’ve always had a quick car there.

“I didn’t get the best of starts in race three, and then got caught up in the middle of the pack before I came together with Fittje as I was making my way forward. Unfortunately the stewards have deemed the incident to be my fault so I have a 10 place grid penalty for race one at the Red Bull Ring.

“Overall everything is very positive and I’m leading the championship at halfway, now I look forward to a big second half of the year.”

Mawson now leads the Championship on 202 points, 20 clear of Schumacher in second with Kim Luis Schramm third on 125. The next round will be contested at the Red Bull Ring on July 22-24.

Halfway mark for Joey Mawson in Germany

Australian Joey Mawson’s Championship campaign in the 2016 ADAC German Formula 4 Championship reaches the half way mark at the Oschersleben circuit this weekend.

Entering this weekend’s fourth event the PODIUM-backed Van Amersfoort Racing driver sits atop the standings, but he’s very well aware that there’s still a long way to go in the Championship.

“It’s been a good week and a half since the last event and I’ve been flat out doing a lot of work in the gym and data analysis,” said Mawson.

“Heading into this weekend I’m really focused on just getting up on the podium again.

“It’s probably wrong to start looking at the Championship as we’re just at the half way mark, but if I can get another race win or two and a podium result the points will take care of themselves.”

After having secured pole position, two wins and a second placing across the three races when the Championship opener was held at the venue in April, Mawson is understandably confident heading into the weekend.

“Oschersleben is probably the track I’m the most familiar with in the Championship already having raced three rounds there.  I’ve also enjoyed a lot of success there but you never stop learning and adapting to the conditions,” said Mawson.

“The key to this weekend is going to be finding a good balance in the set-up of the car early in the weekend and then adaptable and on our toes with minor changes from then on.

“Qualifying well is probably more important at Oschersleben than any other circuit that we go to in the Championship. Passing opportunities are limited, so if you can start up the front it’s always a great start.”

Mawson (152) leads Mick Schumacher (149) by three points in the standings with third placed Mike-David Ortmann a further 49 points adrift.

Joey Mawson maintains Championship lead

Despite a challenging weekend at the Lausitzring, Australian Joey Mawson has maintained the lead in the 2016 ADAC German Formula 4 Championship.

After a sixth place finish in a shortened Race One, the PODIUM-backed Van Amersfoort Racing driver added another piece of silverware to his collection in Race Two on Saturday by finishing second behind Mick Schumacher.

With rain falling as the field lined up for the final 30-minute encounter Mawson, along with the majority of the field, elected to start the race on wet weather tyres.  As the race went on the circuit dried out and he was forced to conserve his tyres while running in fourth place.

Unfortunately contact from another driver damaged the front wing on his car and he was forced to pit for repairs dropping him to 23rd in the final classification.

While disappointed with the final result, Mawson is pleased to have maintained the Championship lead after having secured seven podium finishes from nine races so far in the 24-race schedule.

“It was one of those weekends where we just didn’t get the breaks we needed,” said Mawson.

“In qualifying I was fastest in my group only to be pipped right in the last seconds and end up fourth fastest in my group which meant I started eight in Race One.  That race was then shortened, we only raced 10 of the original 30 minutes, due to a multi-car accident on lap one.

“Race Two I just couldn’t get a run on Mick (Schumacher) to mount a serious challenge for the lead and then Race Three just didn’t go our way when Thomas Preining turned in on me and damaged my front wing.

“On the upside I’m still in the lead of the Championship and the next event is at Oschersleben where I dominated the opening round.”

Mawson now leads the Championship on 152 points, 3 clear of Schumacher in second with Mike Ortmann third on 100.  The next round will be contested in two weeks time in Oschersleben on June 17-19.

Joey Mawson aiming to continue podium streak

With six podium finishes in as many races Australian Joey Mawson has enjoyed a stellar start to his campaign in the 2016 ADAC German Formula 4 Championship.

Entering this weekend’s third round at the Lausitzring circuit the PODIUM-backed driver holds a 35-point lead in the Championship standings but he’s not looking to play the conservative role anytime soon.

After having several weeks out of the Van Amersfoort-prepared car Mawson is chafing at the bit to get back behind the wheel in race mode and continue his great momentum that he has built up over the first couple of rounds in the Championship.

“We’ve had a bit of a break between rounds, I’ve been training hard and we’ve done a couple of days testing but I really can’t wait to get back out there in race mode this weekend,” said Mawson.

“I think we should have some good speed but it’s all about getting the maximum out of the car at the right time when it matters most.

“In the corresponding round last year I qualified fastest in my group and finished on the podium in every race – something I’ll be hoping that I can replicate this weekend.”

In addition to the Formula 4 action the DTM Championship, ADAC GT Masters, Porsche Carrera Cup and Superbikes are also on the program this weekend making it one of the most popular in the eight-round schedule.

“Anytime we race on the DTM program it’s a huge experience.  The crowd at the Lausitzring is one of the biggest we race in front of all year which makes for a fantastic event,” said Mawson.

“Standing on the podium in front of a large crowd is an amazing feeling.  My goal is to finish up there in every race while hoping to win a race or two and ensure that the championship points tick over.”

Mawson will take to the circuit on Friday morning for the only practice session ahead of qualifying in the afternoon.  The driver’s fastest time in qualifying decides the grid for race one and second fastest for race two.  The finishing positions in the opening 30-minute race decide the grid for Sunday’s race three, with the top ten being reversed.

Joey Mawson wins at the Sachsenring

Australian Joey Mawson was victorious at the second round of the 2016 ADAC German Formula 4 Championship at the Sachsenring on Sunday.

The PODIUM-backed Van Amersfoort Racing driver secured a trio of podiums across the weekend’s three races to extend his lead in the championship standings to 35 points.

After qualifying fourth for the opening two races Mawson finished second in the opening 30-minute encounter before he was engaged in an intense battle with Mick Schumacher in the early laps of race two.

On the second lap Mawson was beside Schumacher when their wheels touched at high speed and Schumacher stayed in front.  Coming onto the straight Mawson was again beside his rival in the process of overtaking but the safety car was deployed just at that moment so the Australian had to slot back into second place.

Following the restart Mawson ran in close proximity to Schumacher, Mike Ortmann and Kim Schramm.  Late in the race Schramm spun allowing Ortmann to take the win from Schumacher and Mawson.

Starting from ninth in the reverse-top ten final race Mawson made up several positions with an aggressive start that moved him up four places by the time the safety car was deployed at the end of lap one.

When racing resumed Mawson moved up to fourth, then third on lap six, second on lap 11 and into the lead with a great overtaking manoeuvre on lap 15. The safety car was deployed shortly after,  when racing resumed the Australian pulled a big gap – but then the safety car was deployed again and the race ended under safety car with Mawson taking the win, his third of the year, ahead of Simo Laaksonen and Nicklas Nieslen.

“Winning that final race was very special.  It was a tough battle and I had to make the most of every opportunity, especially given the interruptions by the safety car,” said Mawson.

“I came into the weekend hoping to get some more podiums and I achieved that goal.  As an added bonus I have extended my lead in the championship.

“All weekend we continually improved the speed of my car, I struggled for pace a little bit in the first race but by the third race the guys at Van Amersfoort Racing had it on rails.

“The racing this weekend was very intense, we had some great battles at the front of the field and I’m pleased to have come away with such great results.”

Mawson now leads the Championship on 126 points, 35 clear of Schumacher in second with Mike Ortmann third on 71.  The Championship now takes a short break before returning at the Lausitzring on June 3-5.

Joey Mawson aims to continue momentum

Australian Joey Mawson will be out to continue his stellar start to the 2016 ADAC German Formula 4 Championship when he takes to the Sachsenring circuit this weekend.

The PODIUM-backed driver currently sits 17 points clear at the top of the standings with his eyes focused on more podium results aboard his Van Amersfoort Racing entry.

“I’m still coming off a high after the first round, which has really given me a lot of confidence but at the end of the day you’re only as good as your last race so I’ve got to continue that form this weekend,” said Mawson.

“There is a great vibe around the place at the factory and everyone has been doing a fantastic job preparing some reliable and fast cars.  From my side I need to make sure that I get the best out of the set-up and reward everyone for their hard work.”

Mawson is encouraged by a solid test day at the Sachsenring circuit recently and last year’s victory in the final race at the corresponding round adds further confidence.

“We had a very good test day there but when it comes down to it if you’re not fast on the race weekend the testing speed doesn’t count for much,” said Mawson.

“The circuit itself is quite a bit different to Oschersleben, it has a mix of low speed technical corners but there’s also some high speed fast corners that require you to be very brave.

“My objective is to take each race as it comes rather than focus on the Championship.  I hope to be up on the podium and maximise the potential results in each race.”

Mawson will take to the circuit on Friday morning for the first of two practice sessions ahead of qualifying late in the afternoon.  The driver’s fastest time in qualifying decides the grid for race one and second fastest for race two.  The finishing positions in the opening 30-minute race decide the grid for Sunday’s race three, with the top ten being reversed.

Dominant start for Joey Mawson in Germany

Australian Joey Mawson dominated the opening round of the 2016 ADAC German Formula 4 Championship at the Oschersleben circuit across the weekend.

The PODIUM-backed Van Amersfoort Racing driver was the pacesetter all throughout the weekend to qualify on pole position for the opening two races, transferring both of which into convincing race victories.

Starting from tenth position in the reverse-top ten final race Mawson showed superior speed on his rivals throughout the race to edge his way forward and be placed second with a handful of laps remaining.  With clear air in front of him Mawson set the fastest lap of the race and closed in on race leader Mick Schumacher, who started sixth, but was unable to mount a challenge for the lead before the chequered flag flew.

“It has pretty much been the perfect start to the Championship.  Two pole positions after qualifying, two race wins and a second placing,” said Mawson.

“The reverse-grid race is always an interesting one but I was feeling confident going into the race and was patient during the early laps to ensure that I didn’t get caught up in any incidents.  When I got into second Mick had a three second lead, I managed to close the gap but just ran out of laps to challenge for the win.

“Our pace was great all weekend and I’m very happy to come away with three podium finishes and the lead in the Championship.”

Mawson now leads the Championship on 68 points, 19 clear of Schumacher in second with Kim Luis Schramm third on 44.

The next race in the schedule will be held at the Sachsenring on April 29 – May 1.
